MCESD Discusses Housing Challenges in an Ageing Society
The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) organised a meeting with the Housing Authority to discuss housing in an ageing society. The meeting was also attended by representatives from The Foundation for Affordable Housing.

During the meeting, the Housing Authority shared valuable insights and information, including new data showing a significant increase in the ageing population, as well as proposals and schemes aimed at improving affordability, accessibility, and opportunities for independent living. The meeting also addressed innovative housing solutions, including community-based arrangements.
Social partners expressed concerns about rising rents, the need for innovative housing solutions, and the challenge of properties that are too large for the needs of the elderly. They called for greater public awareness, more flexible regulations, and sustainable initiatives, such as intergenerational and community-based projects.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to developing a strategy that ensures Malta’s housing system can meet the needs of all generations.
