MCESD Meeting Discusses Traffic Mitigation Measures with Minister for Transport

During a meeting with the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Chris Bonett, presented a series of measures aimed at addressing the traffic challenges facing our country.

The Chairperson of the MCESD emphasised that this fifth meeting of the MCESD Council was convened at the initiative of the Social Partners, who requested an update from the Minister responsible for transport on the proposals that had been submitted, as well as on the measures currently being implemented to tackle the traffic issue. This meeting follows on from the previous meeting on this subject.

The Social Partners provided proactive and thorough feedback on the Minister’s presentation and engaged in a constructive discussion, offering their expertise and putting forward concrete and tangible recommendations to the Ministry before these measures are published and communicated to the public.

Both Minister Chris Bonett and Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul emphasised that this meeting marked the culmination of a comprehensive process, which addressed the sector in its broadest sense and was characterised by discussions with experts, social partners, and extensive public consultation.

Minister Bonett expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated and submitted their proposals, stressing that these consultations were crucial to developing effective and successful measures that address the needs and aspirations of the Maltese people. He noted that after receiving over a thousand proposals and ideas from the public, each one was analysed and considered in formulating the final measures.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul expressed his satisfaction that social partners are increasingly being consulted and listened to on matters of economic and social importance. He highlighted that transport is a key area impacting people’s quality of life, making it crucial for MCESD partners to provide their input.

He further pointed out that consulting the partners has led to significant achievements for our country, including the historic agreement on the increase in the National Minimum Wage and the change in the law regulating temping agencies. He concluded by thanking the partners for their invaluable contribution, with the goal of ensuring that Malta and its people continue to move forward.

The MCESD Chairperson concluded by emphasising that this open and sincere dialogue is precisely the spirit of social dialogue that should guide our country forward—fostering initiatives that promote the common good and deliver tangible benefits to the public.
