MCESD holds introductory meeting on Low Wage Commission
An introductory meeting to establish the Low Wage Commission was held this morning with MCESD Council members, led by MCESD chairperson James Pearsall. The Council comprises of social partners (unions and employers).
The aim of the meeting was to initiate the way forward for the setting up of the Commission in relation to the agreement signed by social partners in 2017 regarding minimum wage mechanisms.
Minister under the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela, officials from the Economic Policy Department within the Ministry for Finance, and the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) also participated in a meeting.
The Commission will focus on the minimum wage and its effects. While also evaluating the current scenario in this regard.
The Commission will be chaired by MCESD’s chairperson and will be made up of representatives from unions, employers and Government.
