Malta’s Traffic Challenges Addressed in MCESD Meeting with Responsible Minister and Social Partners.
The MCESD held its Council Meeting to specifically discuss pertinent and highly expected traffic mitigation measures.
Present at this important MCESD meeting were the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Hon. Chris Bonnett; Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Hon. Andy Ellul; Infrastructure Malta CEO, Mr. Steve Ellul; Transport Malta CEO, Mr. Kurt Farrugia; and Permanent Secretary, Mr. Godwin Mifsud, along with the MCESD Social Partners, who shared feedback and proposals in reaction to Minister Bonnet’s presentation. The meeting was chaired by the MCESD Chairperson, Perit David Xuereb.
This MCESD Council Meeting was called by the Malta Chamber to address the urgent challenge and consequences of traffic congestion with Minister Bonnett and his team. The Chamber stressed the importance of the sharing of government traffic plans early with MCESD, allowing for better evaluation and inclusive consideration of recommendations ahead of the rollout of any proposal.
Minister Bonnett presented key statistics and outlined proposals, inviting Social Partners to review these initiatives closely and make their suggestions. He emphasised the importance of collaborative input to critique and refine these measures, aiming for effective solutions that address Malta’s traffic challenges while considering the perspectives of all stakeholders.
The Social Partners provided proactive and thorough feedback to the proposals made by Minister Bonnett and engaged in discussions where they presented and offered their valuable and tangible insights and recommendations to the Ministry.
Minister Bonnett acknowledged the constructive feedback at these early stages and appreciated the value that Social Dialogue can bring to the table in addressing Malta’s traffic shortcomings. The MCESD reaffirmed its commitment to foster collaboration in supporting effective, sustainable transport solutions for Malta in the near, medium, and long term.
