A National Agreement on the Increase in the National Minimum Wage Has Been Officially Sealed.

In last Saturday’s signing ceremony, presided over by the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Andy Ellul, we celebrated the conclusion of the exceptional work carried out by the Low Wage Commission (LWC), led by the Chairperson of MCESD, Perit David Xuereb. Today, the agreement to increase the national minimum wage was officially sealed, with the participation of the Social Partners, who also added their signatures to this significant milestone.

The Commission facilitated in-depth discussions with Union, Employer and Government representatives. Despite the challenges conversations during the process, what truly matters is that, in the end, the Commission members approached the issues in a reasonable, serious, and honest manner, ultimately reaching a consensus on the importance of a balanced approach and in the interest of all parties.

Overcoming these challenges with perseverance and dedication, the Commission formulated a historic agreement proposing annual increases in the national minimum wage for the next four years. This proposal has been presented to the Government which, in turn, has accepted all recommendations.

During this ceremony, the Chairperson of the MCESD and the LWC, David Xuereb, thanked everyone for playing a responsible part in this consultative process, including the Social Partners present, the Deputy Chairperson of the MCESD and the LWC, Mr. Mark Musù, and the appointed expert, Dr. Gordon Cordina, who played a vital role in presenting economic and social considerations that enabled the Commission to reach the unanimous agreement it did.
