MCESD Hosts Council Meeting with Mr. Glenn Micallef, Malta’s Nominee for European Commissioner.

Before the meeting, the MCESD observed a minute of silence in memory of Mr. Lorenzo Vella, the former Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Malta.

 

During the latest MCESD meeting, the Social Partners welcomed Mr. Glenn Micallef, Malta’s nominee for European Commissioner. They spoke favourably about his nomination and extended their best wishes for the upcoming steps. The Social Partners look forward to fully collaborating through MCESD in the best interest of Malta.

Representatives from the Maltese Representation to the European Commission delivered a presentation outlining the political guidelines of the upcoming European Commission (2024-2029) under the leadership of President Ursula von der Leyen. A key emphasis of the new Commission is enhancing social dialogue. The Maltese Representation stressed that the active involvement of the Social Partners is crucial in this critical period, particularly in the discussion and implementation of the legislation during the initial phases.

The MCESD Social Partners engaged in discussions, making tangible recommendations to the nominated Commissioner. They underscored the necessity of collaborating more efficiently to influence EU policies at inception, particularly through close ties with the new Commissioner and EU institutional bodies. The Social Partners expressed their commitment to actively contributing to EU initiatives in the green and blue economy sectors, recognising these as critical areas for sustainable development, economic growth, and the competitiveness of our country.

During the MCESD meeting, the Social Partners highlighted challenges related to effective and timely influence on EU policies as they develop. The importance of continuous communication and collaboration with the new Commissioner, once confirmed, and his team were emphasised. They extended their best wishes to the nominated Commissioner and expressed their commitment to collaborate extensively through MCESD in the best interest of Malta.
