MCESD Chairperson James Pearsell and Executive Secretary Adriana Chircop followed and participated this conference. Along with other items which fell under the agenda, the role and contribution of the National Productivity Boards (NPBs) was discussed.

In Malta’s case, the National Productivity Board falls under the remit of the MCESD which is also tasked with the preparation of the annual report, for which Malta will prepare its fourth report this year. Malta is one of a few European Union Member States that has taken up the European Council recommendation on the development of a national productivity board. This is in line with our belief of investing in ideas, recommendations, and policies which we trust will render a positive rate of return in the short and long term.

In a nutshell, from this conference it was highlighted that Euro participants are currently discussing how to join forces for the best contributions they can create to establish the importance of these reports. These reports are significant to manage countries to create the best policies for the future challenges that the EU is facing to keep its competitivity and productivity.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul explained that in the near future he will see that the recommendations of these reports are further analyzed, so that the process that was started in the last legislature can continue.

Dr. Ellul explained how the MCESD is one of the most important councils in the country and that his role as a Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Social Dialogue is committed to further strengthening the operation of the Council so that the best message will continue to be conveyed.

During this introductory meeting, the following topics were discussed: The impact of inflation on disposable income, cost of production and competitiveness; security of supplies; and the logistical issues of those products being imported and exported facing Maltese business.

The goal of this meeting was to address these issues of national importance which are being discussed in the wake of the war crisis in Ukraine and the difficulties arising, reach European levels.

This is another step towards further strengthening the social dialogue in our country so that immediate actions are taken after that the social partners are fully involved in the discussions that are taking place in the country.

The Chairperson of the MCESD stressed that such meetings and discussions continue to show how effective the social dialogue in Malta is, at both the formal and informal levels.

Mr Pearsall, following the request of the social partners, invited the Maltese MEPs to attend and participate in a formal MCESD meeting.

He also spoke about the Government’s active role both locally and in the international fora in terms of social dialogue, the trade unions and employers which form part of the MCESD Council and their participation in the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

He explained that before MCESD was established, it was referred to as MCED back in 2001.
